Should I Pay Movers A Deposit?

Short answer: NO

Long answer, it depends what type of move is being carried out, for out of town moves and international moves then a small deposit prior to moving day may be justified to cover advance non refundable expenses associated with your job.

Most Companies will require that you pay for out of town moves prior to the trucks departure but, you SHOULD NOT pay for the entire move until your possessions are loaded onto the truck and ready to depart.

For around town moves that require no up front expenditure, a pro forma deposit should not be required, even to “secure your booking”, if a company insists that you pay them money prior to providing a service, you will probably want to avoid using their services.

Why you would not want to pay a deposit-

For starters furniture moving is a service not a product, there are only two justifications for charging a deposit, one is as a booking fee, this should be non refundable and not form part of the time taken onsite, the other is charging for work they have not yet provided.

This can lead to a situation where you by no fault of your own can be left out of pocket due to unscrupulous operators or circumstances beyond your control.

There are plenty of reputable Auckland Moving Companies that will take your booking without asking for any money upfront, a quick check of reviews reveals that a lot of bad experiences with companies involve the deposit , when ChatGPT was queried with the following question:

what percentage of bad Auckland moving-company experiences involve deposits?

It gave the following disturbing answer;

-Based on what I can actually substantiate from the accessible review material, I’d estimate roughly 10–20% of bad Auckland moving-company experiences involve deposits or upfront-payment issues.

But I want to distinguish that from a measured Google-wide statistic:

  • Auckland’s major movers collectively have thousands of Google reviews
  • The deposit complaints I can identify include deposits not refunded, deposits not credited against the final bill, unexpected cancellation/deposit charges, and large upfront deposits. For example, Auckland XXXX Movers has a publicly documented complaint about a deposit/cancellation charge, while XXXXXXXX Movers has a recent complaint specifically warning about large deposits.
  • There are also bad experiences involving payment pressure without an initial deposit — e.g. demanding payment before unloading or threatening to withhold belongings. I would classify those separately rather than inflate the “deposit” number.

My best estimate

~15% is the number I’d use as a working estimate, with a plausible range of 10–20%.

In other words, if you collected 100 genuinely bad Auckland mover experiences, I’d expect approximately 10–20 to involve a deposit/upfront-payment problem. – ChatGPT

So to cut a long story short, do not pay a deposit for an around town move, save yourself the potential time and bother by using a company that does not ask for money before it has provided a service.

Use a reputable licensed Auckland Moving Company and give yourself the best chance that your job gets done properly, before you even begin to move your possessions.
